Sarah Adams first joined the firm as an associate in November 1997 and became a partner in 2002. While at the firm initially, her practice concentrated on representing citizen groups and individuals in complex environmental litigation in the federal courts under the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Ms. Adams argued, and won, a standing dispute before the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in American Canoe Association, Inc. v. City of Louisa. Ms. Adams was a lead author on an amicus brief to the Supreme Court regarding the interpretation of a fee-shifting statute. Ms. Adams was also a major contributor in the Bush v. Gore litigation brought by the firm and one of the lead attorneys in ICO v. Shinn, a lawsuit related to hazardous waste contamination at Liberty State Park in New Jersey. In 2004, Ms. Adams left the firm to spend time with her children and in 2018 she returned to TPM in a new role as Senior Counsel.
Since returning to the firm, Ms. Adams’s practice has focused on research related to new environmental litigation, attorneys’ fees litigation, and monitoring compliance with an injunction in DL v. District of Columbia, a lawsuit related to special education in the District of Columbia.
Ms. Adams graduated from the University of Maryland in 1991 and received her J.D., with honors, from the George Washington University Law School in 1994. While in law school, she was a member of the Moot Court Board and won Best Oralist in the Giles Rich Moot Court competition.
Following law school, Ms. Adams began her career as an associate at the Law Office of Alan Banov practicing in the areas of employment discrimination and labor law before joining TPM.
